Emma Reyes, Ph. D. in Marine Sciences, is the Head of SOCIB Research Area. She is a physical
oceanographer with over 16 years of experience in operational ocean observing and forecasting
Her research interests include coastal ocean dynamics at key circulation chokepoints, air-sea
interaction, remote sensing oceanography, oil spill transport and dispersion. She has published more
than 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles as well as several referenced reports, guidelines and
proceedings and presented her work in more than 50 communications in international scientific
meetings since 2012.
Since 2016, she has been involved in several projects (CMEMS-SE INCREASE, Jerico NEXT, CMEMSIn Situ TAC phase II, EuroSea, Jerico-S3) focused on HF radar data standardization & integration, the
harmonization of HF radar maintenance best-practices, advanced products development, and its
integration in downstream services (as PI of the CMEMS -User Uptake IBISAR project).
She is a member of the EuroGOOS HFR Task Team and of several national Steering Committees to
support the implementation of the agreement between SOCIB and: i) the Spanish Maritime Safety
and Rescue Agency, since 2017; ii) the Port System, since 2019; iii) the University of Cádiz, since
2021. She actively participates in student supervision and training and outreach activities (e.g.
leaflets, case studies, video tutorials, short videos, educational materials, 11#F activities)
Laia Romero is Co-founder and CEO of Lobelia Earth. MSc in Research in Physical Oceanography and with sound experience in business management, her work focuses on the use of satellite data for climate action.
She has worked extensively in Earth Observation with radar technologies, developing geospatial systems and applications, and deploying and executing operational services. In 2016, she joined isardSAT Group with the mission of creating a spin-off company to operationalise isardSAT's scientific developments. That's how Lobelia started.
With over 17 years of experience, Laia is a well-known scientific entrepreneur with a solid track record in the Earth Observation field. She is frequently invited as a key speaker to space technologies events worldwide, and actively participates in the most relevant arenas such as the World Economic Forum and the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP).
Before joining isardSAT, Laia was Deputy CEO and Director of New Business and Innovation at Altamira Information (CLS Group), the world’s leading company on ground displacement, an absolute pioneer on the use of satellite data for commercial products, highly successful in the mining, oil and gas, infrastructure and environmental markets.. She has managed the development life cycle of long operational contracts such as the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS), now deploying the new Marine Data Store, a digital global service with over 1 million monthly interactions.
Prof Dr Baris Salihoglu (PhD Physical Oceanography) is the Director of the Middle East Technical University Institute of Marine Sciences and Director of the newly established METU Climate Change and Sustainable Development Center. He leads a DEKOSIM project establishing a new interdisciplinary centre of excellence (Centre for Marine Ecosystem and Climate Research) funded by the Turkish Ministry of Development. He is the director of METU Climate and Sustainable Development Center. He is the coordinator of the H2020 Black Sea CONNECT CSA and BRIDGE-BS RIA projects. His main research focus is on understanding the effects of climate change and other stressors on the seas, exploring marine ecosystems and biogeochemical dynamics via the combination of modelling and data analyses. His research interests include developing strategies for blue economy, developing technologies to foster blue economy, design and development of digital twins of the sea and marine spatial planning.
